We move away from the big centres to the Greek countryside: Thessaly, Fthiotida, Thetideion. In the house of Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles. The hero of the Iliad, on whom the victory of the Greeks at Troy was based, was struggling to cope with the responsibilities of father, husband and leader. He travels to the oracle of Apollo at Delphi to seek healing. His martial frenzy has affected his bed, his home and his city. In front of the woman he has wronged, he receives the punishment called neoptolemos tisis. The country, the province, is represented by a chorus of women, abandoned and subjugated.
In a reversal of the heroic Iliad, Euripides criticises in Andromache the arrogance of the Greeks and the illusion of the superiority of their culture. The promise of a united, powerful country is belied by a landscape of decay and fear. The responsibility lies not only with the leaders, but also with those who believed them and whose tolerance contributed to the degradation of values. It is the younger generation that is paying the price.
