In recent years, Epidaurus has built up a strong artistic profile thanks to the world premieres it has staged, either in co-production with international organisations such as the Schaubühne, the Schauspielhaus Bochum and the Residenztheater, or with the participation of international companies such as the Comédie-Française with Thierry Rodríguez, or with the participation of international companies, such as the Comédie-Française with Thiago Rodriguez, or by commissioning works of ancient drama from renowned European directors, such as Frank Castorff in 2023 (Medea) and Timofei Couliabin in 2024 (Iphigenia in Avlidis), who collaborated with Greek actors. This year, Ulrich Rasse returns to the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus to direct Sophocles' Antigone with a prestigious cast of Greek actors. This is a co-production between the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the National Theatre, and will be performed in Epidaurus for three days.
Agamemnon, performed in 2022, left a lasting impression with the ecstatic pulse of the performers, who moved on the revolving stage to live music. Rasse, developing his stage language, draws on Nikos Panagiotopoulos' translation to bring out the timeless form of Antigone. The performance will open the Epidauria programme on the last weekend of June and is expected to have a significant impact in the anniversary year of 2025.
