''Electra'' by Sophocles directed by Dimitris Tarloos at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Ancient theatre
What does "restoring justice" mean? Is it possible to live with the consequences of violence? Is violence inevitable? Does revenge close the circle of blood? Is redemption ever possible? And finally, what is the role of resistance when all seems lost?
The Poreia Theatre returns to Epidaurus, this time with its artistic director, Dimitris Tarlou, in his first production at the Argolic Theatre with his Sophoclean version of Electra. In a world plagued by totalitarianism and social injustice, at a time when violence and revenge are often presented as a necessary evil, Sophocles' Electra takes on a chilling relevance. This tragedy is not just a tale of revenge, but a mirror of human dilemmas and the timeless conflict between justice and morality.
Electra, a member of the cursed Atreides family, is a woman caught in this cycle of blood and horror. She embodies the dilemma between the need for justice and the moral imperative to avoid violence. She is not only a tragic creature of fate, but also a creation of her character, a character given to the struggle for justice. Is she a victim of her obsession with revenge or a voice of resistance against the brutality of power? And why, now that the palace is rid of its tyrants, does she not cross its threshold? She simply stays out of the house she hates, or refuses to be part of the system she hates.
